A water softener is an essential part of a humidification installation and is needed to preserve the reverse osmosis unit. The membranes and nozzles will clog and scale up from the calcium and magnesium present in the water. A water softener will prevent this from happening.

A water softener is a device that exchanges calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium carbonate are less soluble than sodium carbonate. The amount of minerals present in the water remains constant, but the composition changes.

This exchange is vital in extending the lifespan of the installation. Mineral deposits will build up as limescale, clogging the nozzles and membranes. This is especially the case on certain parts of the high-pressure units and reverse osmosis units where water is forced through very small holes whilst under pressure. Limescale sticks to the surfaces and is very difficult to remove. A water softener is essential for the reliable functioning of an adiabatic humidifier. A water softener provides the following advantages:
